Deputy Chairperson, African Union Commission

Kwesi Quartey, deputy chairperson of the African Union Commission, trained first as a lawyer. Today he has over 35 years of experience as a career diplomat, serving in various capacities in Ghana’s embassies and high commissions in Cotonou, Cairo, Brussels, Havana, and London. He was Ghana’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations in New York, and deputy high commissioner of Ghana to the United Kingdom. He was later appointed Ghana’s ambassador to Ethiopia and as permanent representative to the African Union in Addis Ababa.
For many years, he was director of the legal and consular department of the Ghanaian foreign ministry. In 2012, he was appointed deputy minister of foreign affairs & regional integration, and in 2015 secretary to Ghana’s president HE John Mahama.
